Slumdog Millionaire- 2008Directed by Danny Boyle
Starring Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Madhur Mital, Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan.
There is no doubt that this movie fully deserved the Best Picture Academy Award. It is one of the best films I have seen in years. It is well done and the story is one that anyone can relate to. It is definitely a crowd pleaser.
Following Jamal (Patel), who has done the impossible by answering questions that no one has been able to answer on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," the audience sees how every moment of his life has led up to Jamal fulfilling his destiny. It is an amazing story of the human spirit as he battles against all the odds to win the girl of his dreams.
The opening segments of the film are disturbing and borderline unwatchable- they depict Jamal's torture after the show's producers think he has cheated- and his early days as a boy in the slums of Bombay. The movie seems to be brutally honest about the conditions of children living in poverty and some of the scenes literally made me feel ill. But the images they included all had a very powerful purpose and fit the movie's theme very well.
Overall Rating: A+
This is definitely a must-see movie for everyone.
